Are all Aloe Vera juice’s created equal? How do you know that you aren’t just wasting your hard earned money? It’s unfortunate that you can’t trust a health product to really be healthy! So with Aloe Vera there is a few guidelines to stick to. First, if it looks like water and taste like water, guess what, it’s probably water! The second thing to consider is the packaging. Light degrades Aloe Vera, so look for a product stored in a container that the light can’t penetrate, preferably a medical grade plastic. The last thing to look for is how the Aloe is processed. There are two types, whole leaf and inner gel. While whole leaf might sound like a good thing, I protest that it is just the cheap and lazy way of processing. There is a toxin located just on the other side of the skin that contains high concentrations of Aloin and similar anthraquinones which exert a powerful laxative action when taken internally. Therefore, when the whole leaf method is used this toxin needs to be filtered out, which in turn also filters out some of the beneficial properties of the Aloe as well. In addition, recently I found an article from Molecule magazine that discusses the difference in the increase of absorption of the two methods. The inner gel method proved to be far more beneficial in increasing the absorption vitamin C and E. To see the full article visit http://www.mdpi.com/1420-3049/13/8/1599/

So a few years ago when I first learned that Aloe Vera could be taken internally, I was bewildered! Like most of the American population I thought it was only to put on the skin when I got a sunburn. In fact, I remember once as a kid when I got severe burn on my back after spending the day at the reservoir. It was my savior! My mom cut a leaf off our plant, rubbed it all over my back and instantly the pain subsided! So upon first learning that there was such a thing as Aloe juice, I was intriguedto say the least. Daily I would google Aloe Vera and see what else this plant had to offer. One day I came across an article that discussed a study where diabetics were fed bread made with it. WHAT??? This was very interesting to me because I had recently started learning my way around the kitchen and had already personally experienced some very positive effects of taking my daily supplements with Aloe Vera juice. That’s when Super Aloe Girl was created! My first experiments were very easy, just finding any ole’ box mix that called for water and replacing it with the Aloe juice. So here is one of the very first recipes. I hope you enjoy!

Preheat oven to 350. Place mix in a large mixing bowl. Add eggs, pineapple, and AloeBoost and mix until well blended. Pour into greased loaf pan. Bake until golden brown, approximately 60 minutes. Cool 5 minutes, run a knife around the edges and remove from pan. If you can wait… cool completely before slicing.

Ooops I meant be aware of Aloe Vera! The use of Aloe Vera can be traced back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians, who named it ‘the plant of immortality’. Russians refer to it as the ‘the elixir of longevity’, and the American Indians call it ‘the wand of heaven’. These are but just a few of the very fitting titles it has been given. The benefits of this magical plant are endless, although in America today most people only think of using it topically for a sunburn. It is said that Cleopatra used it to protect her skin from the sun and consumed the gel to keep her skin looking young from the inside. Alexander the Great was known to have carried the plant into battle to treat the cuts and wounds of his soldiers. The Spanish Conquistadors and Missionaries were probably responsible for taking Aloe Vera to the “new world”. Aloe Vera was planted around missions and used extensively by missionaries and the native population as a universal healing agent.
