What to look for when purchasing Aloe Vera products

Is all Aloe Vera juice created equal?  How do you know that you aren’t just wasting your hard earned money?  It’s unfortunate that you can’t trust a health product to really be healthy!  So when purchasing Aloe Vera, there is a few guidelines to stick to.  First, if it looks like water and taste like water, guess what, it’s probably water!  The second thing to consider is the packaging.   Light degrades Aloe Vera, so look for a product stored in a container that the light can’t penetrate, preferably a medical grade plastic.

The last thing to look for is how the Aloe is processed.  There are two types, whole leaf and inner gel.  While whole leaf might sound like a good thing, I protest that it is just the cheap and lazy way of processing.  There is a toxin located just on the other side of the skin that contains high concentrations of Aloin and similar anthraquinones which exert a powerful laxative action when taken internally.  Therefore, when the whole leaf method is used this toxin needs to be filtered out, which in turn also filters out some of the beneficial properties of the Aloe as well.  In addition, recently I found an article from Molecule magazine that discusses the difference in the increase of absorption of the two methods.  The inner gel method proved to be far more beneficial in increasing the absorption vitamin C and E.  To see the full article visit http://www.mdpi.com/1420-3049/13/8/1599/
